Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's One-Day International Lineup Versus India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-match ODI series facing India, as high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a unexpected inclusion.
Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI side following scoring just one run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a Test recall in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Changes
Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a Test return as Australia seek a solution to their opening batting issues.
Bowling Returns and Injury News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after taking a break since starring for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue by the time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures
Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to seal a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
